STAGE SELECT

By default, the stage order is chosen for you at random. Insert a coin, then hold the joystick in one of the four principle directions and press the Start Button. You can change the stage order (except for the Boss stages and the final stage).

Joystick Direction
First --> Second Stages
Fourth --> Fifth Stages
Up  Airport --> Swamp Sky --> Beach
Left  Swamp --> Airport Beach --> Sky
Down  Airport --> Swamp Beach --> Sky
Right  Swamp --> Airport Sky --> Beach

SLAVE FORMATIONS

You actually have some control over the slave formation you want. The formation depends on the number of lives you have plus the number of bombs you have. Slaves only assume these formations if you collect a Slave icon when you already have 2 slaves. Additionally, the slaves automatically assume these formations when you play as the secret fighters. Playing as the any of the seven standard planes and the Hell Diver requires you to use a charged attack in order for your slaves to assume these formations. You can only change the formation if you collect a bomb or lose a life (!) as the seven standard planes and the Hell Diver. As the secret fighters, you need to collect another Slave icon after your "Formation Sum" changes. This secret is also present in Raiden Fighters 2 and Raiden Fighters Jet.

# Lives + # Bombs
("Formation Sum")
Slave Formation
0, 4 or 8 11:00, 1:00 Front Fixed (2 way firing)
1, 5 or 9 Slow Trailing (secret planes only) or Fixed Position (standard planes and Hell Diver via charged attack) (Double Shots)
2 or 6 Crossing (3 way firing)
3 or 7 Enemy Seeking (Normal firing)

GAME MODES

Raiden Fighters 2 allows you to select from up to three different game modes. These game modes are enabled via DIP settings in the machine. When these game modes are enabled, an interstitial screen pops up prompting you to select a game mode before you select your fighter. These game modes are also available in Raiden Fighters Jet.

Game Mode
Description
NORMAL This is the normal game mode.
SPECIAL You fight against the bosses only in this game mode. The Special mode is a good way to practice against the bosses, especially when you want to memorize their attack patterns. For the boss stages in Stages 3 and 6, you are taken directly to the main parts of the bosses.
EXPERT This mode is made available last. In this game mode, the enemies shoot faster (this is basically the Mission 2 difficulty). The enemies also fire off an aimed shot at you when they explode. Bigger enemies fire off many bullets when they explode.

HOW TO GET THE SECRET FIGHTERS

In Raiden Fighters 2, there are many more secret fighters you can select from. Of course, included in this cast of secret fighters are the legendary Raiden mk-II from Raiden II and the Judge Spear from Viper Phase 1. This time, you can even play as the Player 2 blue versions of these two ships (Raiden mk-IIß and Blue Javelin). These two ships have different weaponry and abilities from their red counterparts. You can also play as the Slave of any fighter. The main advantages of using Slaves are:

  • They are small in size, so you do not get hit too easily.
  • Excellent firepower. Slaves as the main fighter have a high attack rating.
  • Slaves power up quickly. You only need to collect 4 powerups of any type, "M or "L," to attain maximum fire power. (Slaves have no missile.)
The only disadvantage is that the Slave plane moves as fast as the fighter they normally accompany. Slaves of slower ships such as the Beast Wing and Raiden mk-II are so slow that they are practically unusable. The fastest of the Slaves are of the Judge Spear (gray in color) and the Dark Sword (black in color, you select this Slave by moving the cursor into the "?"). The Fairy is the slave of the Miclus.

Please note that you will not be able to play as all of these secret fighters on every RF2 machine. Raiden Fighters 2 has a special time release feature that unlocks more and more of these secret fighters over time. When these secret fighters are unlocked, you are no longer required to perform a joystick sequence to select them, as they then appear directly on the Fighter Selection screen. For statistics on these secret fighters as well as the standard planes, go to the RF2 Fighters Page.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When doing these joystick sequences, you must not let go of the joystick when you select the "?" Random Selector. For this to work correctly, you must hold the joystick in the specified direction as you select the "?"

GETTING THE 100,000-POINT MEDALS QUICKLY

You can gradually build up to the 100,000 point medals. But, to increase the value of the medals, you must collect all of medals you see on the screen. With no medals on-screen, the next medal you uncover will be raised in point value. The easiest way to do this is to have only one medal on screen at a time and collect it. The following method will give you 100,000 point medals quickly. This method will take a lot of practice to pull off, but in the end, it's worth it.

Insert Coin, hold Joystick Up or Down, then press Start. You may select any plane you wish. However, to make this easier for you, select a medium-fast to fast fighter, such as Chaser 2000 or Judge Spear.

When you begin the game, you will begin at the Allied Airport Stage. At the very beginning look for a green building on the far left side of the screen. Hover above the lower portion of the building. A Miclus will appear from the bottom of the building.  Hover over the Miclus while shooting him to collect the medals the Miclus spits out one at a time. This will increase the medal's value. You should now have 90-point silver medals. Shortly thereafter, a large green bomber appears. Destroy it and get the Slave Icon [S].

Now begin building up the blue medal's value. Destroy all the fighters that appear. One of them is blue in color. Destroy it and get a blue medal (100 points). Then, a medium-sized heliplane appears. Destroy it and get the 2 blue medals (200 points each). Next,  two tanks appear at the upper part of the screen. Quickly destroy them and get the blue medal that appears (300 points). Then, six tanks appear, three of which carry a medal. Destroy two at a time and get the blue medal that appears. (400, 500, 600 points). Next, two tanks appear on the right side destroying the friendly aircraft on the ground. Destroy ONLY the bottom one. Leave the heavier one on the top alone. Now, immediately go to the left side of the screen. Destroy the tank over there on the left side and get the blue medal (700 points). Go back to the right side. You'll see another light tank below the aforementioned heavier tank. Destroy only that light tank. Get the blue medal (800 points).

Now begin building up the green medals' values. A large green bomber appears. Destroy it and pick up the Slave Icon. A small truck on the left will travel across the screen and collide with the heavier tank that you left alone on the right. Both the truck and the tank will explode. After this a Miclus will appear from the large white plane on the ground above the collision. Overlap the Miclus and shoot it to get the green medals on at a time. You now should have 9000 point medals.

At this point you will initiate the 100,000 point medal mode. While doing this, DO NOT collect any of the gold 10,000 point medals you see! You must get 9 of the 10,000 point gold medals to appear on the screen at one time. When this happens, they will all explode, signaling to you that you are in 100,000 point medal mode. First, a heliplane appears. Destroy it and it releases 2 gold medals. Destroy the small blue plane that appears, and one more medal appears (3 total on screen). Another heliplane appears. Destroy it. 2 gold medals released (5 total). Yet another heliplane appears. Destroy it. 2 more gold medals released (7 total). Now go to the bottom of the screen immediately. Two small blue planes appear. Destroy the first one with your regular weaponry and the second one with a Bomb. 2 more medals released (9 total on screen). Now there are 9 gold medals on the screen, all of which will explode at once! You can now build up to the 100,000 point gold medals.

Immediately release another bomb right after releasing the first one. The two bombs are used to protect the 3 small friendly tanks from the huge enemy tank's* shots. The first bomb cancels the first shot from the huge enemy tank. The second bomb cancels the second and third shots. You'll see the message "Defended the Tanks" on the top of the screen and a Miclus will appear. Overlap and shoot the Miclus and get the medals one at a time. You should now have 100,000 point medals!

Want to view an video showing how to do this? Click here to download the movie (10MB MP4). If you have trouble viewing this clip, install the CCCP codec pack.

NOTE: If you miss one medal when they are valued above 10,000 points, future medals will be reset to 10,000 points. you'll need to build up again to 100,000 point medals. It is not necessary to have collected the 90-point or the 900-point medals to enter the 10,000-point gold medal mode. Collecting at least the 80 and 800 point medals is perfectly acceptable. If you miss one medal when they are valued above 10,000 points, future medals will be reset to 10,000 points. You'll need to build up again to 100,000 point medals.

*IMPORTANT! You must not destroy the huge enemy tank while protecting the three smaller ones! The huge enemy tank must fire three times in order to get the three "Defended the Tank" bonuses required to uncover the third and final Miclus in the Airport stage.
HIDDEN BONUSES IN EACH STAGE
ALLIED AIRPORT STAGE
Miclus: Hover over the lower portion of the green building on the far left side of the screen near the beginning of the stage. A Miclus will appear.
1. Uncovering Miclus #1
Miclus:Before the second large green bomber appears, look for two tanks on the right side, a smaller tank on the bottom and a heavier one on the top. Destroy the smaller tank and leave the heavier tank alone.  A small truck on the left will travel across the screen and collide with the heavier tank that you left alone on the right. Both the truck and the tank will explode. After this, a Miclus will appear from the large white plane on the ground above the collision.
1. Uncovering Miclus #2
TANK x 3: Defend the three small friendly white tanks that the Huge Enemy Tank shoots at from its shots. If you defend all three tanks, a Miclus will appear from the huge white plane on the ground to the right of the Huge Enemy Tank! You can accomplish this by throwing two bombs to absorb the Huge Enemy Tank's shots. Oddly enough, your bombs don't hurt the small tanks, or anything else but the enemies for that matter. (100,000 points each)

Miclus: Defend the three small friendly tanks from the huge enemy tank's shots. You MUST NOT destroy the huge enemy tank while protecting the 3 smaller ones. If you defend all three tanks, a Miclus will appear from the huge white plane on the ground to the right of the Huge Enemy Tank!

1. Uncovering Miclus #3
Fairy: Destroy the huge enemy tank's turret and leave the tank body alone. When it can no longer retreat, a Fairy will pop out of the tank.
1. Uncovering the Fairy
  • Quick Shots: Destroy the large green Bombers before they can shoot (100,000 pts each)
  • Quick Shots: Destroy the medium-sized heliplanes before they can shoot (30,000 pts. each)
  • Aegis II-c assistance: Sometimes, one or two Aegis II-c planes join you in the beginning of the stage, fighting alongside you. They usually appear when this stage is the second stage you play. For every enemy the Aegis II-c destroys, you receive 10,000 points. The Aegis II-c planes die with one hit by enemy bullets. If you're able to keep the planes alive until after the Huge Enemy Tank, you'll receive 100,000 points for each Aegis II-c plane that remains.
SWAMPLAND STAGE
  • Miclus: At the very beginning of the stage, let go of the second small hovercraft and destroy the sixth one. A Miclus will appear from the sixth hovercraft you destroy.
Miclus: To the right side of the second large green bomber that appears (which releases a Slave Icon after you destroy it) look for a small water hole. Hover above the water hole for a few seconds. A Miclus will pop out of the water hole.
2. Uncovering Miclus #2
  • Miclus: Before reaching the boss, there's a Large White plane that releases a Bomb Icon when you kill it. Destroy it as the plane is leaving the screen. A Miclus will appear.
  • Fairy: About the middle of the stage, 8 medium-sized blue planes will appear, one after another. Quick Shot all of them and a Fairy will appear from the trees.
  • Quick Shots: Destroy the medium-sized blue planes before they can shoot. (20,000 points each)
  • Quick Shots: Destroy the Large Green bombers before they can shoot. (100,000 points each)
"VIOLET HEAD"
MEGA-TRAIN BOSS STAGE
  • Miclus: Look for a brown building on the right side. Hover over the bottom portion for a few seconds. A Miclus will come out of the building.
  • Miclus: Right before Violet Head, hover over the gray building to the right for a few seconds. A Miclus will appear.
  • Miclus x 4: Fly over all the tanks that reside in each of the four numbered railcar platforms. Do not destroy the tanks. If you fly over the tanks, their turrets will explode. This is part of the secret. To complete the secret, fly over the artillery that come out of hiding into view on the railcar platforms, after which a Miclus will appear onto the platform. The first railcar platform, No. 10, has six normal tanks; no artillery appear.
  • Fairy x 2: Violet Head has three railcars that have six small cannons, three on each side. Destroying each of a left-right pair of cannons within one second of each other will give you a Destroyed at  a Time Bonus. If you get three Destroyed at a Time Bonuses by destroying all three left-right pairs in this manner, a Fairy will appear. Repeat for the other railcar of this type. To accomplish this easily, throw a bomb directly over the middle of the railcar. The second railcar of this type that you see never appears fully onscreen, so it is not possible to extract a Fairy from this railcar.
AIR FORTRESS SQUADRON STAGE
  • Quick Shots: Destroy the large White planes before they can shoot (100,000 points each)
Fairies: Destroy all of the giant Air Fortresses completely. You do this by destroying all the planes' engines that are visible on the screen. Even those Air Fortresses that have only a portion of their wing on-screen can be destroyed in this way. When you do, the entire Air Fortress explodes in a spectacular ball of fire. If you can accomplish this, then later on in the stage, before the Boss "Hummingbird," the striker planes that appear along with the large plane that gives you a Bomb Icon will be replaced by Fairies. These Fairies do not give you Bombs. (100,000 points each)
Destroy these suckers! Get Fairies! (Screenshot by ArcadiaBay)
  • Quick Shots: Destroy the striker planes before they can shoot (10,000 points).
  • Fairy: Destroy the large plane, which appears before the Boss "Hummingbird," as it is leaving the screen. A Fairy will appear.
ENEMY BEACH LANDING STAGE
Miclus: Hover above the nearly vertical water channel between the island and the mainland at the beginning of the stage for a few seconds. A Miclus will appear. (100,000 points).
Screenshot from alamone's replay MPEG. Secret marked by CYM.
  • Quick Shots: Destroy the armament on the transports before they can shoot, then destroy the middle part (50,000 points each).
  • Miclus: A Miclus will appear if you can destroy the armament (one turret and two ammo cannons) before the middle part on each of all of the transports. Destroying the middle part first on even one of the transports will nullify the secret (100,000 points).
  • Miclus: Before the Boss, Gust Weasel, you will see two huge tanks. Destroy the Tank on the right first before the one on the left. A Miclus will appear. Destroy both tanks within one second of each other and you will receive a Destroyed At a Time bonus worth 100,000 points.
  • Fairy x 2: Destroy the two huge tanks' turrets and leave the tanks' main bodies alone. After a while, a Fairy will pop out of each tank.
"SAND LOBSTER"
LAND CARRIER BOSS STAGE
Fairy: On Sand Lobster's front side, a huge turret will appear partially on-screen at the top of the screen. Destroy the turret at this point before it goes offscreen and a Fairy will appear.
6. Uncovering Fairy #1
Fairy x 2: On Sand Lobster's middle-front there are two huge turrets lying close to each other. Destroy them quickly (by throwing several bombs and shooting them aggressively) the FIRST time you encounter them, when they appear partially onscreen on the right side. Each will release a fairy.
6. Uncovering Fairies #2 and #3
  • Miclus x 2: Two elevators on Sand Lobster will each raise one tank to the carrier's deck. DON'T destroy the tanks. Hover above them for a while and a Miclus will pop out of each tank. Mmmmmm.....lobster.
"RED EYE"
FINAL BOSS STAGE

Miclus: After the screen scrolling slows down, look for a house that is triangular in shape. Hover over the middle of the house. A Miclus will appear.
7. Uncovering Miclus #1
  • Fairy: You will see a huge tank that looks similar to the Huge Enemy Tank in the Allied Airport Stage. Destroy its turret and leave the main body alone. Later, a Fairy will pop out of the tank.
  • Fairy: You will see a second huge tank. Destroy its turret and leave the body alone. Later a Fairy will pop out of the tank.
  • Fairy x 2: You will encounter two more of these huge tanks simultaneously. Destroy their turrets and leave the bodies alone. Later a Fairy will pop out of each tank.
  • Miclus: Before you enter the fortress you encounter a group of turrets. Destroy the turret on the right in the second pair and fly over where that turret was. A Miclus will appear.
  • Miclus: In that same group of turrets, destroy the turret on the right in the last pair and hover over where that turret was. A Miclus will appear.
THE BONUSES

Raiden Fighters 2 has various hidden bonuses. You can earn many bonus points if you can uncover these secrets. When you uncover a secret, a message appears on the top center of the screen. Most of these bonuses are present in the first Raiden Fighters and Raiden Fighters Jet.

QUICK SHOT!
(10,000 pts - 100,000 points)
Killing a large enemy before it has a chance to fire at you.
DESTROYED AT A TIME! (100,000 points)
Destroying two special targets within one second of each other.

DISCOVERED THE FAIRY!
(100,000 points + Bomb)
The Fairy is a hidden character in the original Raiden series. She gives you one Bomb (wait for her to release the Bomb icon first) and 100,000 points if you collect her.

KILLED THE FAIRY!
(10 points)
Your weapons can hurt the Fairy. Be careful where you drop bombs too.

DISCOVERED
THE MICLUS!
(100,000 points + 9 medals)
This little blue critter is Seibu's mascot. In the Raiden Fighters series, he spits out 9 medals when you shoot him, then he explodes. To make him appear, you hover over certain places or perform certain tasks. The Miclus is helpful in building up to the 100,000 point medals.
DEFENDED
THE TANK!
(100,000 points)
In the Allied Airport Stage only. You get this bonus if you can defend the white tanks from the Huge Enemy Tank 's shots.
DESTROYED
TANK FIRST!
(30,000 points)
This bonus appears in the Beach Stage only. You get this bonus if you destroy the tank that comes out of the transports on the beach before you destroy the main part of the transports themselves.

Very many thanks goes to Lynx (Raiden Fighter) for allowing me to post his secrets up here!

*Notes about the Destroyed At a Time bonuses: These bonuses are so commonplace in Raiden Fighters 2 that I didn't bother to list them. You usually destroy each of any pair of any special enemies or parts of bosses you see to collect the Destroyed at a Time bonus.
